MELS; Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme

From 1 April 2025,

The MELS & MEPS regulation for Commercial Storage Refrigerators under the National Environment Agency (NEA) will be implemented.

The objective of setting MEPS & MELS is to raise the average energy efficiency of regulated goods in the market, as well as to help consumers compare the energy efficiency and make more informed purchasing decisions.

Besides enjoying life-cycle cost savings from lower energy consumption, companies will also reduce their carbon footprint.

What would this mean?

• Any importer and manufacturer that intends to supply any regulated goods in Singapore must apply to the NEA to be a registered supplier.
• Inefficient models will be gradually phased out from the market while the more efficient models takes over

With the regulation,

• Consumers are strongly encouraged to look out for Energy Labels, which helps identify more energy efficient appliances.
• Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) level for Commercial Storage Refrigerators at Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) 95, or 1 Tick equivalent.
